Diabetes – Did you Know?

 

·       The American Diabetes Association’s latest recommendations have lowered premeal target blood sugars to 70-130

 

·       Diabetes is the 6th leading cause of death in Texas

 

·       For every percentage point drop in A1C (average blood sugar for the past 3 months), the risk of eye, kidney and nerve disease drops by 40%

 

·       Mexican Americans are 1.7 times as likely to have diabetes as non-Hispanic whites

 

·       According to The American Diabetes Association, either a low-carbohydrate diet or a low-fat, low calorie diet can help you lose weight in the short term (up to 1 year). (Note: if you follow a low-carbohydrate diet your doctor should monitor your lipid levels and kidney function)

 

·       In Texas, almost 20% of the people over age 65 have diabetes
