In June 1993, the results of the Diabetes Control and Complication Trial (DCCT), a congressionally funded, 9 year study, were released. DCCT proved that when diabetes is aggressively managed through intensive therapy, the complications and hospitalization associated with diabetes could be substantially reduced or eliminated. These findings were reinforced by the recently published United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study which found similar outcomes for type II diabetics who receive early, intensive education and therapy.

Before the results of DCCT were released, we recognized the importance of patient education as an integral part of the "Team Approach" to the proper care of patients with diabetes. We have been providing this to our patients for many years. The Education Centers’ organization and plan of instruction is in accordance with the standards set forth by the ADA for recognition. The trio of instructors is made up of one Registered Nurse and two Registered Dieticians, all of whom are Certified Diabetes Educators (CDEs).

Classes are taught in group sessions which is cost effective for patients and allows them to share ideas and feelings with others who have diabetes. Family members are also encouraged to attend all classes in order to give additional support to the patient.

Our program is structured in such a way that primary care physicians can refer most patients directly to the Education Center. Our physicians become involved in the care of the patient when their primary care physician feels it is medically necessary.
